REPORT ON PAKISTANI-AMERICANS VIEWS TOWARDS RISE IN EXTREMISM IN PAKISTAN

WASHINGTON DC: In order to better depict the views of the Pakistani-American community toward rise of extremism in Pakistan, PAKPAC undertook a web-based survey. This survey was sent to 3,000 e-mail recipients, of whom 205 responded before the survey closed.  A set of eleven questions were part of the survey. PAKPAC believes that results of this survey should provide insight into the views of the Pakistani-American community, which can be an important source of information for American policymakers as they consider policy issues and select mechanisms to resolve challenges in the South Asia region. Based on this survey, the Pakistani-American community clearly feels there are opportunities to improve mutual understanding and alignment between US and Pakistan.

The salient findings of the survey are:

  • 94% of the respondents are of the view that extremism poses a problem for Pakistan
  • Pakistani-American community believes that a third of their fellow Pakistani-Americans and half of Pakistanis in Pakistan are in denial about the issue of extremism
  • 79% of survey respondents felt that it is in Pakistan’s best interest to participate in  “war on terror”
  • Pakistan’s current political parties or their leaders are not held in much esteem by Pakistani-Americans
  • Most feel that important issues faced by Pakistan are governance, followed by extremism, lack of appropriate education and lack of justice in Pakistan.  
  • Most believe that Kerry-Lugar bill would not be effective with conditions attached to civilian support part of the bill.
  • Pakistani-Americans are least confident of President Obama’s Afghanistan/Pakistan policy
  • Have a high disapproval rating for Pakistan’s Interior Minister
  • Pakistani Americans are critical of Pakistan’s media role in curbing extremism
